We are Ottawa's newest assault on sensibilities, Ontario's unholiest invention since the 75 watt bulb, and Canada's greatest thing called the Pejoratives. Definitely as cool as a tattoo of a snake wrestling a water buffalo.
News:
You thought we were dead, didn't you? You came in, took all our stuff, had a memorial and we were just ASLEEP ON THE COUCH, YO!?!
Well we're up. And whoa smelly do we have a show for y'all. Concert On The Clyde!! Yes! It is that time of year again, time to c'mon out for 2 days of awesome!! Camping, sun, beer, LIVE MUSIC, BBQ and did I mention awesome? Cuz awesome is totally gonna be there, and it was all like you should come too. Yeah. Awesome said that.
Seriously tho, we haven't played live... or with each other... or seen each other, in a while, which means we haven't seen all o' YOU in FOR FRIKKIN' EVER. So you probably think we've been sitting around, doing nothing but
getting high and eating aerosol cheese, playing the occasional show
and telling girls in bars that we're successful musicians. Well,
you're only part right. We've actually been working sort-of hard at
getting the the first Pejoratives album ready to drop, early in the
new year.
In the meantime, we've got a show coming up with your bestest musical buddies, and mine, ROPEADOPE RECORDING ARTISTS Antizario! 5 bucks, The Pejoratives, SL Sheehan at the Rainbow!
C'mon out for some serious, and i mean SERIOUS musical chops-offs.
It'll be Dope. Ropeadope, even.
Date: Friday, November 23, 2007
Show starts at 10pm sharp-ish. |
|

Alrightythen...
Next Friday, June 29th, our good buddies Donkey Punch are releasing their newest studio EP at the Live Lounge at 126.5 York Street. This is not your standard CD release party. This is a DiPSTIcK (DonkeyPunch Supa-Tight Information Kit) release party. You get all the face melting DP tracks you would normally get, but it's being release on a USB drive. Cut's out the middle man of ripping the tunes to your iPod.
Also on the DiPSTIcK, The Pejoratives (that's us), are featured on a "Secret" bonus track. You can check out Old Lady Driving in the Fast Lane with Her Blinker On Doing, Like, 60 along with the DP stuff on the DiPSTIcK. Coolness abounds.
In addition, we're opening for DP at the Live Lounge. In the next few days, check for updates here for specific event details like cover and times. |

Been a while since the last post, but we've been rockin' out the Clocktower every Thursday since. If you missed it, there's three things you need to do to redeem yourself:
- Come to The Clocktower Thursday Night.
- Listen to the tunes on the Media page.
- Keep checking both of the above for details about the compilation CD that will be released soon.
The CD will feature recordings made at the Clocktower, so if you missed it, you can catch it. If you were there, you may hear your drunken screams.
Good Times... |
|
Alright folks, we had a good week last week but there's no time to rest! Onward and upward! This week SL Sheehan will be sitting in with The Pejoratives for a good old fashioned trip down memory lane. We'll be doing some old Stairwell K tunes, as well as always, improvising the best funk music you'll hear. So c'mon down to (say it with me) The Clocktower, 575 Bank St, this Thursday night, 9pm and no cover. |
|
Thursday nights are becoming a bit of a big freakin' deal at The Clocktower! Our recent on-stage (and on tape!) success with guest drummer... sorry, special guest drummer... sorry, FEATURED special guest drummer Dave Koczij has given people a taste of what we're trying to do down there in the basemenet of 575 Bank St. This invite-only improv funk jam showcase is really taking off.
This week we're welcoming Pat Cooney and some of the lads from Inglewood Jack to sit in with us and see what happens. Its the unprecedented mixing of TWO funk bands, so I have absolutely no idea what kind of music will come of it (of course, I did fall down and bang my head on the coffee table this morning).
This is also to promo our show with Inglewood Jack this Saturday the 17th of February at the Thirsty Toad, 1344 Bank Street. We've got tickets, so if you want one, either give us a call, email, carrier pigeon, smoke signal, or messenger bullet - or just come out Thursday night to the Clocktower - 9pm, no cover. |
|
This Thursday just past, The Pejoratives were swinging some serious meat in the basement of the Clocktower Brew Pub on Bank St. And it has paid off, kiddos - we're in like Flynn. From Tron. You know. Anyway, HUGE THANK YOUS to everyone who made it out to our NOW WEEKLY funk session, and we hope to see you all there again this week (Thursday, January 25).
PLEASE NOTE: we are NOT playing February 1st at the Clocktower. There is a previous booking downstairs, and well, we want to see DonkeyPunch at the new Live88.5 venue. Check DP's site for all the deets. |
|
(Is there some way to get lasers or shiny foil to make this look fancy? No? Maybe some glitter?)
This week is the kickoff for The Pejoratives' Thursday Night Showcase
at the Clocktower Pub!!! C'mon out to 575 Bank St (Bank & Pretoria,
like a block south of the Queensway, seriously you've driven by it a
hundred times), get some awesome food, pick from a wide selection of
great beers and enjoy the first of many Thursday nights of excellent
music.
9pm start. |
|
Well, for those of you trying to get super awesome tunes from us lately, you probably noticed that you couldn't. There were some malicious attacks made on our Domain Host and some server changes... made things break pretty quick. But, the good people there fixed things up real nice and everything is back online.
Luckily, we've figured out all that jazz and you can get your daily fix of the funkiest funksters who ever funked the funk funk... I mean The Pejoratives. |
|
The Pejoratives would like to express our grief and sorrow at the loss of the Godfather of Soul, aka The Hardest Working Man In Showbiz, Soul Brother Number One, Mr. Dynamite, Minister of The New New Super Heavy Funk, and Mr. Please Please Please, James Joseph Brown Jr, on Christmas Morning, 2006.
We ask everyone to please get up, get on up, and pay your respects for the man who brought soul to the forefront, brought funk into existence and laid the seeds of hip-hop (if it wasn't for Funky Drummer, hip-hop would have half as many songs). A fifty-year career, close to 130 Top 100 hits, around 75 albums, no-one can touch the musical contribution that James Brown made, nor the influence or inspiration his talent sparked.
On behalf of the Godkids of Soul, The Hardliest Working Band In Ottawa, I urge you to grab your James Brown LPs, CDs, cassettes, mp3s, whatever, and take 10 minutes to get "Stoned To The Bone".
"I Don't Want Nobody To Give Me Nothing (Open Up The Door, I'll Get It Myself)" - James Brown |

We have another new track up on the media page. This one is a long one (something like 9 minutes), but it's a good one. It starts out pretty mellow, but soon picks up and kicks you right in the aural nutsack. Click it, crank it, and cough up a bloody pair of awesome. |
|
As promised, we have some new material to disseminate... Old Lady Driving in The Fast Lane with Her Blinker On Doing Like 60 is now available on the Media page. Check it out. Its currently my favourite tune that we have up there. Two thumbs up. |
|
So, it looks like we've an awesome spot to practice these days. Muss Music is a recording studio/rehersal space that is a great place to play. The last two times we've been there, we've written some new stuff, honed our old stuff, and generally had a good time doing it. Plus, they're really nice folks there.
We recorded our last practice (as is our policy now) and from the 2.5 hours of tapes, we've found some gems that we wanted to hold on to. Be sure to stay tuned to the media page: we'll be posting some good stuff soon!!! |
|
Well, actually, it is a problem. That's why we're actively seeking practice space. Since Blip has moved on from his, let's say, convenient Nepean School of Music teaching job, our practices have been lacking the necessary location for a while now. Whilst none of us has the "easy way out" of a basement in which to practice, we think we may have found a suitable replacement in order to make the funk, well, funkier.
This weekend we're going to check this place out, and if it works out for us, it looks like it could be home for us for a while. Also, as an added bonus, this place is a working recording studio, so you could be hearing some pristine new stuff from us soon. Stay tuned! |
|
Stupid iTunes!
My fault! I lost this one on my harddrive for a month and a half. It's up now, ready to please your insatiable need for good funkin music. It's called If You Don't Like This Song, the Terrorists Have Already Won, and it's specially crafted for the jazzheads out there (read: Ern and Blip show off through the whole damn song) but with good bounce and a minty aftertaste.
-Si! |
|
We've just added a new track to the Media page. Make sure you check out "Frank And Beans": it is super-awesome. Not just awesome, super-awesome. It's the kind of track you have to listen to multiple times to hear everything that's going on. We are also still tweaking it, so super-awesome may be upgraded to super-bitchin' soon. Keep an eye on it! |
|
Last night at the Capital Music Hall, our good friends Donkeypunch played an awesome set in the round 2 final of Live 88.5's Big Money Shot. And, well, they won. $50,000. Holy crap on toast.
Rock juice was flying everywhere. Faces were melting. CDs were given away (not as graphic, but cool none-the-less). Now they have $50,000 cash to purchase new gear, develop their "talent", and generally hit the world by storm. And I know a liquor store that can cash that oversized novelty cheque today!
Also, it's Aaron's birthday today, if anyone really cares. |
|
If you haven't checked out our online music-stravaganza, you are missing a good time. Now, you've got two new reasons to take a look see. In addition to the wicked-good "Fish 'n' Chips" track that was previously available, we've added some tracks recorded from a particularly productive practice session. If you listen really close, you can actually hear Mike gorging himself on some chicken wings... The man likes his chicken wings... |
|
Alright kids, we got the space, we got the skill, we got the tools. We're gonna be firin out knuckle-chili - uh, I mean new songs like a 12 gauge funk shotgun. So lay down a tarp, check back in a few weeks and prepare for a double-barrelled faceload of good music. |
